System failure 0xc1900101-0x40017 can be displayed for a variety of reasons.

To fix it, try:

Update the drivers;
Deactivate temporarily (or delete) a third-party antivirus program;
Free up at least 30 GB on the disk;
Disconnect flash drives, smartphones, and gamepads from the PC. You can leave the mouse and keyboard.
Deactivate the firewall.

After the changes have been made, restart the update installation.

If the methods described above did not help, try the following:

Run the window with the command on behalf of the administrator. To do this, click: Search →CMD → Right mouse button → Run as administrator.

Copy and paste these commands into the window:


net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop appidsvc
net stop cryptsvc
DEL «%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat»

rmdir /S /Q c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution1
sc.exe sdset bits D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)
sc.exe sdset wuauserv D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start appidsvc
net start cryptsvc

And press Enter

Download File 1 and File 2 to make the necessary changes to your Registry. If one of them didn't start, it's not critical either.

Restart your computer and try to update the OS again.
